Does My Child Need a Tooth Extraction?

The best way to determine if your child needs a baby tooth extraction or another restorative service is by scheduling an appointment with our team so we can assess their specific needs and create a custom treatment plan. If they have been complaining about tooth pain, either because a tooth has received an extensive amount of trauma or decay or because a baby tooth is blocking an adult tooth from emerging, we may recommend extracting one or more teeth.

Are Tooth Extractions Painful?

Tooth extractions are one of the more invasive procedures within pediatric dentistry, but our team always takes the time to ensure that they are comfortable and painless for our young patients. We always begin by injecting a local anesthetic into the gums, and after a quick pinch, the gums and teeth will be numb throughout the procedure. We recommend keeping ice packs and pain medication on hand to relieve any pain or discomfort in the days following your child’s appointment.

When Can My Child Return To School After a Dental Extraction?

We recommend that kids take off at least two or three days from school, work, extracurriculars, and other activities. Once they are okay to return to their daily routine, they should still avoid doing anything too strenuous for another couple of days, as this can disturb the blood clot in the socket and disrupt the healing process. They may also want to continue eating soft foods for a while just to put as little pressure on the healing area as possible.
