At Helotes Pediatric Dentistry & Orthodontics, we always strive to preserve natural teeth! However, there are some instances when an extraction of a primary or permanent tooth is the best way to preserve your child’s oral health. Extractions can seem intimidating! At our office, we always work with a gentle touch and ensure that you are fully informed before moving forward with treatment plans. Here’s what you need to know about tooth extractions for kids!
When Is a Tooth Extraction Necessary for a Child?
Wondering when an extraction is necessary for a child? There are some instances when we may recommend an extraction.
-
They have a badly damaged or injured tooth
-
Their tooth is severely decayed
-
Their primary teeth are staying in too long and are crowding adult teeth
-
They need more room in their jawline before orthodontic treatment
What Is the Tooth Extraction Process?
After we determine that an extraction is the right option for your child, we will move forward with determining which type of sedation best suits their needs. At their extraction procedure, we’ll thoroughly numb the area around the tooth and administer the sedation. Then, we’ll use advanced tools to loosen the tooth and remove it with dental forceps. After their extraction is complete, we will send you home with a detailed set of aftercare instructions. This will help your child have a quick and speedy recovery!
Safe Sedation Dentistry
At Helotes Pediatric Dentistry, our mission is for kids to feel as relaxed and comfortable in our care as possible. Whether they’re getting a tooth extraction or another dental treatment, we offer safe and effective sedation dentistry. Our team advises parents on the types of sedation we offer and makes a recommendation based on each child’s unique needs. Our sedation options include both nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and oral conscious sedation.
