Taking Care Of Your Child's Teeth During COVID

One of the many issues that have arisen as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic has been a lapse in routine dental care. If you have not been able to prioritize your child’s dental health during this time, Helotes Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics is here to help. Read on to learn some tips for taking care of your child’s health during this difficult time.

Reinstate a Healthy Routine

Most families have had extra time spent at home since the pandemic began almost two years ago. While there are often positive outcomes associated with that, at-home dental habits may have become a bit of a chore for your child. This is likely because their regular routines have been disrupted, like those established before leaving the house to go to school or childcare. If that sounds familiar, it’s time to reframe your child’s mindset about their dental care. Emphasize the importance of a consistent daily oral health routine to maximize the look and feel of their smile. A healthy mouth is also linked to good overall health. And remember the basics of great care! Help your children brush their teeth gently for two minutes at least twice a day. And always have them floss on a daily basis.

Health Eating is Key

As always, eating healthy is so important. Not only will a diet packed with proteins and fresh fruits and veggies keep your family healthy and strong, it’ll do the same for their smiles. Sugary and starchy foods are best avoided or enjoyed in moderation. Additionally, encourage your family members to drink plenty of water. It's not only good for their active bodies but it helps wash away residue from their teeth.

See the Dentist, Safely

If you have been skipping dental visits due to the pandemic, we recommend picking them back up again. Too many missed visits can cause major setbacks in the development of a healthy smile. Don't be nervous about bringing your child to our office. You can rest assured that we’re taking every precaution possible to keep you, your child, and all our staff here safe from COVID-19.
