Tips for Paying for Your Child's Dental Emergency

It can be quite the surprise, not just to you but also to your wallet, when your child is suddenly dealing with a dental emergency. Unless you already set aside money for medical emergencies, you may be wondering how you can pay for any out-of-pocket costs that come along with getting the urgent dental care your kid needs. Here are some tips to keep in mind to take away some of the stress on you and your budget.

Use Dental Insurance

If you’re currently enrolled in a dental insurance plan, then it’s likely that you have some sort of coverage for dental emergencies. As with all other treatments, the amount of coverage will vary from plan to plan. It’s important to also confirm what counts as a dental emergency in your plan. Some may not say that a toothache qualifies as an emergency but that a dental abscess does. Our pediatric dental practice is in-network with many insurance carriers, including Medicaid, so our team is happy to answer any questions you might have regarding using your insurance benefits.

Flex Spending Accounts

Some insurance plans offer flexible spending accounts (FSAs) or health savings accounts (HSAs). These tax advantaged accounts have different rules but both offer the holder flexibility in what the funds are used for. Talk to your insurance provider to see if you qualify for this type of account.

Sign Up for a Payment Plan

These days, it’s quite common for dental practices to have payment plans available. With these plans, you can divide up any out-of-pocket costs you might have into smaller, monthly payments rather than having to shell out the full amount all at once. At Helotes Pediatric Dentistry, we offer payment plans through CareCredit to provide our patients budget-friendly payment options. CareCredit has a variety of payment plans including some with 0% interest.
