Just because your child is brushing their teeth twice a day doesn’t mean they’re brushing their teeth properly. Dentists recommend that everyone brush their teeth for two minutes at a time, every time, including kids. Many kids don’t know how long two minutes is. Therefore, they often don’t brush their teeth for enough time to get an effective clean. This can lead to the development of cavities and decay, which can create future complications as their adult teeth grow in.
Three ways you can encourage your child to brush their teeth longer.
1. Set a timer
One of the best ways to ensure your child is brushing their teeth for the recommended two minutes is to set a timer. When the timer goes off, that’s when your child will know that it’s time to stop brushing! Some electric toothbrushes come with a built-in timer for convenience.
2. Brush with them
Teach your kids to brush their teeth properly and brush yours at the same time! Brush your teeth with your child for two minutes to help them stay consistent with their brushing time.
3. Have them brush to their favorite song or video
If your child has a favorite song or video that’s about two minutes long, have your child brush along to it. Perhaps you can do a happy dance together to make it fun. There are some fun brushing songs available on youtube. The distraction helps make sure that the kids are brushing their teeth for longer — and having a great time while doing it!
