Can pediatric dentists work with children who have special needs?
Pediatric dentists receive more training than general dentists do because they must attend a few additional years of training after completing dental school. Part of this training includes how to work with patients who have special needs, which is why some pediatric dentists even work with adults who have special needs. Pediatric dentists tend to be very patient and accommodating people who enjoy helping their patients feel totally comfortable and at ease in the dental chair. Our team will be happy to cater to your child's individual needs.
What if my child has trouble staying still?
It's very common for children to struggle with sitting still, even if they don't have special needs. Our practice offers two forms of dental sedation in our office, nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation, which can relieve dental anxiety and help kids feel relaxed during their treatment. We also perform dental services on an outpatient basis at the Children's Hospital of San Antonio, where patients are rendered unconscious for the duration of their treatment. To learn more, please contact our office or visit our sedation page.
What can I do to help my child have a positive experience?
You are welcome to bring your child to our office before their first appointment so they can meet our team and take a quick tour of our facility, and we can get to know them and prepare for their first appointment. You can stay with your child during their treatment, and they can bring a blanket or stuffed animal to hold during their visit. Kids also enjoy listening to music or watching their favorite show on TV while we perform their treatments. If there's anything else we can do to help your child, please let us know, and we will do our best to accommodate them.
